The Nielsen Lab at the University of Texas at Austin Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) studies the toxicological effects of ubiquitous aquatic contaminants across levels of biological organization, with a focus on early life stage fish. Ongoing projects in the Nielsen Lab include studies examining heavy metal-induced developmental neurotoxicity in fish, photo-enhanced toxicity of oil to marine fish and invertebrates, trophic transfer and toxicity of PFAS to marine and estuarine fish species, and effects of chronic pharmaceutical exposure on non-target aquatic biota.
